What You Need to Know About Search Engine
Optimization (SEO) ?
At the last CITe
Lunch and Learn Series
Aaron Geh presented search engine optimization (SEO).
At a high level, students learned the basics
of SEO, including how it works and why it is
important. In addition, they learned why it
is so important to drive more qualified
traffic to the web sites, convert that
traffic to leads or sales, and then measure
success in real numbers. There was also a Q
& A for students after this
interactive session.

Quality Assurance and Software
Testing

IT Executive Exchange met for Leveraging
Cloud Computing!
Pie in the Sky or the Next Big Thing on the
Horizon? One of the fastest growing consumer
technology trends is cloud computing, where
data and software is housed in remote data
centers rather than on-site servers.
Microsoft's cloud computing data center in
Northlake Illinois is designed to hold up to
400,000 servers. Amazon is offering its
Elastic Computing Cloud service. The
Economist reports that “Google is said to be
operating a global network of about three
dozen data centers loaded with more than 2m
servers (although it will not confirm this).
Microsoft is investing billions and adding
up to 35,000 servers a month. Other internet
giants, such as Yahoo!, are also busy
building huge server farms."
These and other
firms are betting that IT shops will want to
move a great deal of their processing into
these ultra-efficient centers. This session
of the ITEE was held on Friday, June 12,
2009 and considered the pros and cons
of cloud computing in our unique setting of
NE Ohio.
Open Source Software. Does it work?
Does it pay? Will you regret it later?
Particularly in difficult economic
times, firms are re-assessing whether or not
it makes sense to use Open Source Software,
which appears to be significantly cheaper.
This session of the
IT
Executive Exchange included a range of
topics around Open Source, such as: how does
it fit into the overall software portfolio,
what are the (hidden) costs and benefits,
what are some of the tools and packages that
exist for various applications, security
issues, and other important factors. The ITEE began with a networking
lunch on March 27, 2009 from 1 pm to 2 pm and then took place
from 2pm to 4pm.
The Executive Business Forum
featured Umesh Ramakrishnan!
On November 10, 2008 The University of Akron
welcomed Umesh Ramakrishnan as he presented
his research at the CITe
Executive Business Forum. As a leading
headhunter for the Cleveland firm CTPartners,
Mr. Ramakrishnan has rare access to the
world’s top business executives who have
successfully climbed to the top of their
organizations. The discussion included how
to spot the most effective mentors, making the
most of networking, the advantages of taking
risks and many more inspiring, thought
provoking rules to guide a professional
career. A more detailed look at all of Umesh’s findings can be found in his new
book There’s No Elevator to the Top,
available on his website
www.noelevatortothetop.com.
Effective Benchmarks IT Can Use to Gauge
Success
Several effective IT benchmarks used by
large and small companies were discussed at
the last
IT Executive Exchange January 30,
2009. Local IT professionals talked about
how to balance the cost of maintaining
businesses’ internal IT systems with the
cost of new implementations and outside
projects, as well as the best ways to
measure end-user surveys. In addition,
attendees shared some important aspects they
consider before comparing their IT
performance with competitors. It was also
interesting to learn that many firms are
developing creative ways to link
compensation and IT metrics goals.
The Lunch and Learn Series was a great
success!
CITe hosted Anita Campbell for the
Lunch and Learn Series
event on October 16, 2008.
Our popular event started with a networking lunch
in the Murphy Room. Our guest speaker Anita
Campbell discussed the topic Web
2.0 and Social Media Strategies. Some
students won books by
answering questions during the presentation. Web 2.0
concepts have led to the development and
evolution of web-based communities and
hosted services, such as social-networking
sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs,
and folksonomies.

What do new graduates expect from
employers?

IT Executive Exchange on November 7,
2008. The topic was "What do new graduates

and hiring managers who are trying to
prepare for the challenges they may face
when hiring “Generation Y.” The student

their potential future employers. It was an

Intel Ranks UA Third in U.S. Wireless Access Akron, Ohio, Oct. 12, 2005 — The University of Akron is a national leader in the use of wireless internet technologies, according to Intel Corp.'s second annual survey on wireless Web access at U.S. colleges and universities. The University of Akron ranked third nationally in Intel's ranking among 50 campuses with the greatest wireless internet capability. Only Ball State University and Western Michigan University ranked higher than UA. Other Ohio schools in the rankings included Case Western Reserve University (eighth) and the University of Dayton (17th). “The University of Akron has been known for years as the most wired-for-wireless public university in Ohio,” says UA President Luis M. Proenza. “Now we have achieved recognition that our efforts are considered exceptional from a national standpoint as well. “Our campus network, with 950 access points, allows the use of wireless computers both inside the classroom and outdoors on the campus' greens and walkways, as well as at our Wayne College branch campus and even at our stadium,” Proenza explains. The survey findings were based on the percentage of each college campus that is covered by wireless technology, the number of undergraduate students and the computer-to-student ratio for each school. Data was gathered through university interviews, review of public documents and additional industry sources; the “America's Most Connected Campuses” ranking conducted by Princeton Review and published in Forbes; and an online survey that schools completed between May 1 and Sept. 1, 2005, which was conducted by the Center for Digital Education and Intel.
